Jos Buttler century helps England to ODI series win over Australia

Australia captain Steve Smith admits he is at a loss to explain their recent poor ODI form

Smith's decision to put England into bat was based on a defensive mindset that Morgan prefers his team to bat second and a chase a total.

The Australian captain was fined 40 per cent of his match fee, and faces a one-match ban if his team fail to get through their overs again in the next year. Smith believes the process should be reviewed and more responsibility handed to the third umpire.

"I'm not sure I'm a big fan".

On his controversial dismissal: "I was given out so I had to get off the field".

"It's hard for them to overturn the decision".

"I'd like the third umpire to actually make the decision whether it's out or not out".

And in fact Smith was involved in the other moment of big controversy.

Buttler said he was in no doubt he'd taken the catch cleanly. "I think any wicket keeper would tell you if you get your fingers underneath it", he said.

"They always look either way on TV, but yeah it was out".

"With the World Cup in 2019 there is a lot of one-day cricket to be played between now and then", he said.

An unbeaten 113 run partnership between Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes secured England the game and series victory against Australia.

Leg-spinner Adam Zampa's omission in favour of batsman Cameron White raised eyebrows, particularly when England's spinners contributed to slowing Australia's bright start.

Series: This is the third ODI in a five-match series.

England celebrate the wicket.

White made 17 after being promoted to No.3 and also dropped a sitter of a catch.

"So it gave someone else the chance to come out and bat and the guys nearly got us home".

Smith felt that poor batting by the Australian lower order proved to be costly in the end.

Pietersen agreed, and said the soft signal call needed to go.

Jos Buttler took the Aussie attack apart.

"It was probably a good thing, I wasn't hitting them very well anyway". Get rid of the soft signal.

"We're still trying to find the right balance". I'm not watching the ball closely enough or something like that.

Buttler crashed six fours and four sixes in his knock, reaching fifty from 52 balls before going to three figures in just 31 more deliveries as, combined with Woakes - who struck five fours and two maximums - England plundered 102 from the final 10 overs. Despite finding some swing early on, Mitchell Starc wasn't on the mark and he was soon replaced by Pat Cummins - one of four changes made by Australia for this game - who started with a maiden and troubled Roy on a couple of occasions.
