A female student from Italy High School was airlifted to an area hospital, Ellis County Sheriff Sgt. Joe Fitzgerald told the USA Today Network. Officials confirmed in a news conference that the suspect was a student, and he left the school building immediately after firing shots in the cafeteria.
The girl was taken by helicopter to Parkland Memorial Hospital. Both teens were students at the school. In the Class of 2016, 97.7% of students received their high school diplomas on time or earlier.
UPDATE: 9:54 a.m. EST - At least two schools, Stafford Elementary School and Italy High School, were on lockdown Monday morning as a result of the shooting, WFAA-TV reported. The 17-year-old says she saw the cafeteria doors fly open and a rush of students running out after a girl was shot. Her condition has not yet been released.
The motive of the shooting is unknown.
"This morning's tragedy hits the heart of this community", Joffre said.
A shooting has been reported at a high school 45 minutes south of Dallas, Texas. The investigation is ongoing and more information will be shared as becomes available. The Ellis County Sheriff's Office announced on Twitter that a suspect was in custody.
