Mohamed Salah to kids in Africa: Never stop dreaming

The striker, who now plays for Liverpool, was awarded for his 2017 performances with Liverpool as well as the Egyptian national team, which has qualified for the 2018 World Cup.

Club team-mate and Senegal global Sadio Mane came second, with Gabon's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang third, the Confederation of African Football announced at its gala dinner on Thursday night.

The Liverpool striker has had a stunning year as part of the Egyptian team which made it to the Africa Cup of Nations final in February.

At Liverpool, he has scored 23 goals in 29 games so far this season. "Qualifying for the World Cup after 28 years, and to have a great season with the clubs Rome and Liverpool". The awards ceremony took place on Thursday in Accra, the capital city of Ghana.

"This award is a big award for me ... it's a special moment for me in my career".

Sadio Mane has cleared the air on a reported rift with Liverpool teammate, Mohamed Salah. This is the first year CAF allowed captains of those teams to also vote for the continent's best player, it said.

"I think we have a good team and we did well in the African Cup and the qualification for the World cup, everybody saw that".

Salah was awarded the EA Sports Player of the Month award in November.

In early 2017, the forward was the central figure for Egypt as they finished runners-up at the Africa Cup of Nations. The award is also aimed at improving the development of soccer in Africa.

"When a footballer aims for excellence, they must rise to the highest standards, irrespective of where they play".

"Referees already have their rewards and marks of recognition".

Shortlists had been drawn up for both awards when the CAF executive committee made a decision to dump them, initially without offering any explanations.
