"There are considerable risks for the USA because Pakistan could retaliate in ways that would be very problematic for US regional interests", he said, such as curtailing intelligence co-operation and USA supply lines into Afghanistan.

Afghan-born Zalmay Khalilzad who has emerged as one of the vocal critic of Pakistan and has accused it of being a state sponsor of terrorism made the remarks ahead of the announcement of White House actions to pressurise Pakistan.

Last month, Russian Consul General in Karachi Dr Aleksandr Khozin had said Pakistan and Russian relations were getting stronger and both the countries shared views on peace in the region.

USA officials have long accused Pakistan of allowing terror networks to operate within the country's borders. "But with the Palestinians no longer willing to talk peace, why should we make any of these massive future payments to them?"

He tweeted: "We will respond to President Trump's tweet shortly inshallah".

He said the war in Afghanistan can not be fought in Pakistan and "we need to find a peaceful solution to the issue".

Pakistani Defense Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan returned criticism in a tweet noting that Islamabad "as anti-terror ally has given free to U.S.: land & air communication, military bases & intel cooperation that decimated Al-Qaeda over last 16yrs, but [the United States has] given us nothing but invective & mistrust".

"Trump is not the first president to be frustrated by Pakistan".

"There is a nexus between the USA and India, they share the same stakes", Asif said, adding that "the USA wants to use India like they used Pakistan in the past, or maybe a step further".

The two countries, he added, maintain an "all-weather strategic partnership" and China intends to further deepen its cooperation with Pakistan in all fields. "The worldwide community should acknowledge that", Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told reporters here on Tuesday.

China is investing billions of dollars to help build a network of power plants, rail, road, and communications in Pakistan.

The prime minister's statement said the real challenges in Afghanistan were political infighting, massive corruption, phenomenal growth of drug production, and the expansion of ungoverned spaces inside Afghanistan full of sanctuaries for multiple global terrorist organizations that pose a direct threat to Afghanistan, its neighbors, and the region.
