The Heisman Trophy victor couldn't convert those opportunities, and plenty of Sooners fans wished Mayfield had been given a whole lot more chances to conjure his usual magic during Georgia's epic 54-48, double-overtime win Monday night.

But Lorenzo Carter would save the Bulldogs, when he blocked a field goal setting up Michel to play hero, which he did by taking a direct snap and shooting 27 yards around the left side for the game-winning score.

The match up was tied at 45 at the end of the fourth quarter.

Michel rushed for 181 yards and three touchdowns on just 11 carries, including the game-sealing score in the second overtime.

After a long wait, the Georgia Bulldogs will return to the field shortly to fight for the right to play for the national championship.

Georgia will face the victor of the Sugar Bowl in the national championship.

Coach Kirby Smart said the defense "stunk it up" in the first half, but there were no dramatic changes in the second.

Either a Pac-12 or Big Ten team had appeared in every edition of the Rose Bowl for the past half-century since the formation of the then-Pacific-8 Conference - except after the 2001 season, when the Rose Bowl became the BCS national championship game for a year.

"I made plays. I gave up plays".

The Sooners will be led by fleet-footed quarterback Baker Mayfield, the likely Heisman Trophy victor going against Georgia's physical defense. Because of that intangibles advantage and historic offensive firepower, the Sooners have a great shot to emerge victorious in the Rose Bowl.

Even so, Georgia is one win away from its first national title since 1980. Sooners coach Lincoln Riley decided not to go for it, and Austin Seibert made his 33-yard kick.

Fromm made the sure the Bulldogs would make the most of it, driving his team 59 yards on seven plays, capped off by a 2-yard run by Nick Chubb out of the Wildcat with 55 seconds left to play.

"He's just such a good athlete", Smart said.

But with a chance to close out the game with 3:22 left in the fourth, Georgia freshman quarterback Jake Fromm led a game-tying drive.

An Oklahoma defense that surrendered at least 38 points three times in the regular season showed improvement down the stretch, particularly in holding TCU to 20 and 17 points in their two meetings.

The game was the highest-scoring Rose Bowl, one point more than USC's 52-49 victory over Penn State in the 2017 Rose Bowl.
