The gun-battle started late Monday evening after government forces, including the Indian Army's 44 Rashtriya Rifles, Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police and the paramilitary forces, cordoned off and raided some homes in Batmoora village of Shopian in southern Kashmir, following a tip-off that rebels were hiding there, police officials said. The gunfight continued throughout the night.
Jammu Kashmir Police Chief SP Vaid said that two bodies of militants were recovered from the encounter site while Deputy Inspector General of Police for South Kashmir Range SP Pani said that one of the killed militants was a local.
In occupied Kashmir, Indian troops, in their fresh acts of state terrorism, martyred two youth and a woman besides injuring dozens during a cordon and search operation in Wanipora area of Shopian district on Tuesday.
The police said that the woman died in the crossfire between militants and forces during the encounter. She succumbed on her way to the hospital.
A police official identified the slain militants as Tanveer Ahmad from Batmuran Shopian and Ali alias Qari of Pakistan.
The locals according to reports staged massive pro-freedom protest protests in and around the encounter site.
"Around 24 civilians were brought to our hospital out of which we referred some 11 people to Srinagar hospitals for specialized treatment. The cordon was strengthened and the civilians of nearby area were evacuated", a police spokesperson said. Intermittent firing between the security personnel and the militant has been taking place. Their condition was however reported to be stable.
