Boise State players celebrate after defeating OR in the Las Vegas Bowl NCAA college football game Saturday, Dec. 16, 2017, in Las Vegas. Rece Davis, Kirk Herbstreit and Molly McGrath will call the game. Broncos cornerback Avery Williams averaged 12 yards per punt return to lead the Mountain West, scoring two touchdowns.
As the lead tightened, Boise State grew rattled, expecting a replay of their September loss to Washington State, in which the Broncos held a 21-point lead midway through the fourth quarter.
OR had a chance to cut it to a one-possession game but Herbert was sacked near midfield, and Boise State drove 86 yards in 11 plays capped by Wolpin's second 1-yard touchdown run.
The speech seemingly did little to pump up the Ducks, as Boise State was all over them from the onset. They held OR to 47 yards rushing and 1.7 yards per carry, recording nine tackles for loss with four sacks. In a freakish sequence in the final minute of the first half, two Boise turnovers resulted in an 86-yard fumble return for a touchdown and a 100-yard interception return, cutting the Broncos' halftime lead to 24-14. AJ Richardson is second with 494 receiving yards. An early road game at Oklahoma State will give a good indication of just how high Boise State's ceiling might be in head coach Bryan Harsin's fifth season.
With Saturday's win, Boise State finished a season with at least 11 wins for the first time since 2014.
OR is 7-5 and went 4-5 in the Pac-12. From that point on, the Boise defense took control, as linebacker Leighton Vander Esch and company swarmed the Ducks from all directions the entire afternoon.
OR tacked on a garbage-time touchdown with 1:12 remaining when Herbert hit Jaylon Redd from eight yards out, but the game had already essentially been decided.
The Ducks couldn't get anything going on offense, as evidenced by quarterback Justin Herbert's stat line of 233 passing yards, two touchdowns and two picks.
During his next visit, he will be able to look at spots on the field where he passed for four touchdowns, as well as the end zone where he ran for a short score, to help the Trojans (11-2) beat North Texas 50-30.
As a team OR managed to rush for just 47 yards, more than 200 yards below its season average (268 yards per game).
The Broncos were in position to add to that lead even more late in the first half, as they drove the ball down to the OR 10-yard line with less than one minute remaining. He replaced Willie Taggart, the former USF coach who is headed to Florida State.
Oregon: The Ducks didn't exactly do much to back up their push for Cristobal's promotion to head coach. Boise State won the first two games, winning 37-32 in 2008 and 19-8 in 2009.
