The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a crash involving a Highlands County School bus that was hit in the rear by a semi-truck

Gregory Bueno says 39 students were on the Highlands County school bus Wednesday morning when it was rear-ended by the truck near Lake Placid.

The crash happened around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday on U.S. 27 near Lake Placid Drive.

Lockwood sustained minor injuries, as did bus driver Selena Hawthorne, 59, of Lake Placid, and two bus passengers - Erika Alvarez, 18, of Lake Placid, and Luis Rodriguez, 14, of Lake Placid, the FHP said.

A tractor trailer hit the school bus from behind and caused the bus to roll over on its side.

Florida school bus crash injures eight

Two students were airlifted to Tampa General Hospital with serious injuries and two students were ground transported to the local hospital.

The school bus was stopped to allow students to get onboard, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The accident occurred on U.S. 27 at Lake Ridge Drive.

The semi-truck driver, 45-year-old Stanley Lockwood, was charged with careless driving.
