Modi claimed his government's success in getting loan from Japan and starting the bullet train project had pinched Congress. Seeking to counter objections to Sardar Patel statue in Bharuch, he said it would bring vast growth to the region in the form of tourism.

Speaking at a public meeting in Bharuch earlier, Modi pointed out how the Congress was recently defeated badly in the UP civic body elections, the results of which were declared on Saturday. Thanking the people of Rajkot for giving him his fi rst election victory, he said, "While we are creating records of victory, Congress is creating records of defeats".

Political experts opine that the Congress party's rout in UP would have a significant impact in the mindset of voters in Gujarat, where the first phase of polling begins on December 9.
