The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report on crime in 2016, released on Thursday (November 20) has reiterated certain popular beliefs while negating others. Bengaluru topped the list for cyber crimes for the last two years.
Majority of cases under crime against women were reported under "Cruelty by Husband or His Relatives" category (32.6%) followed by "Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage her Modesty" (25%). Around 4,882 cases of rape were reported in the state in 2016, followed by UP with 4,816 cases and Maharashtra with 4,189 cases.
The national capital is followed by Mumbai, which recorded 12.3 per cent or 5,128 criminal cases against women.
The data released by the NCRB only reflects the number of cases that have been registered with the police. However, 159 more rape cases were also registered in the rural areas of Delhi, taking the total number of rape cases in the entire national capital territory to 2,155.
Madhya Pradesh has again earned the dubious distinction of having the highest number of rape cases registered among all states past year.
The state also held the second position in the country in cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSOA), with 4,815 cases registered followed by MP with 4,717 cases in 2016. In Crime against women, Delhi reported highest crime rate of 160.4 in comparison to national average rate of 55.2. The numbers of cities followed a similar patter, with Lucknow reporting the highest number of atrocities reported among the 19 metropolitan cities, and Patna and Jaipur following. Mumbai came in second, with 5,128 cases reported.
However, a total of 15,379 persons were trafficked during the year including 58.7% children.
Maharashtra reported the highest number of missing persons (94,919 - 17.2%) out of the total of 5,49,008 persons (2,34,334 males and 3,14,674 females). As many as 1,123 murders were reported in AP previous year as against 1,099 in 2015. Maharashtra topped the list with 12 such deaths while poll-bound Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh have reported 9 such deaths in custody.
Cases of cyber crime, rape, crime against woman, crime against children, kidnapping and abduction, crime against Scheduled Castes (SCs)/Scheduled Tribes (STs) showed an increasing trend while cases of murder, rioting, robbery and dacoity decreased in 2016, said the NCRB report.
In the city of Delhi - which also reported the highest number of crimes against women among the 19 metropolitan cities - 13,803 crimes against women were reported in 2016. Economic offences declined from 3,566 in 2015 to 3,119 in 2016.
The NCRB report also first time included the statistics on the seizures of arms, ammunitions, drugs and currency by central armed police forces - the CISF, the BSF, the CRPF, the SSB, the Assam Rifles - and central police organisations like the National Investigation Agency.
