Gas prices are holding steady this week in Rhode Island.
Across the border in MA, gas prices are down five cents this week.
"Despite a forecasted 5 to 20 cents decrease in coming weeks, motorists will see higher than expected December gas prices - especially compared to year-end prices from 2015 and 2016", AAA spokesperson Jeanette Casselano said in a statement. It's also 40 cents higher than the price in Rhode Island was a year ago at this time: $2.20 per gallon.
In 2017, gas prices have strayed from typical trends.
Yet again, Hardin County had the lowest average price in the region at $2.31, which passed Shelby County at $2.32. In contrast, the cheapest gasoline, at $2.40 per gallon, is in Carbondale. This year, those factors have been outweighed, AAA said, by the impacts of two major hurricanes, steady consumer demand and continued growth in gasoline exports. The national average has gone up 37.6 cents since past year and is also up 3.5 cents since last month. This is the second week in a row that Metro Detroit's average gas price has dropped.
Other gas stations on the stretch of South State Road 7 between Northwest 215th Street and Interstate 95 remained at $2.39 or less.
According to the Energy Information Administration, in the first half of 2017 USA exports of total motor gasoline averaged a record high of 756,000 barrels per day, a 3 percent increase from the first half of 2016.
This December drivers will not find significant savings at the gas pump but, AAA says, early 2018 looks promising.
