Dan Mullen has been targeted to be the next head coach at Florida, according to sources with direct knowledge of the situation.
Yahoo Sports and ESPN have reported Mullen to be the Gator's choice. While nothing is set in stone just yet, a decision is expected to come by the end of the day on Sunday.
Prescott holds 38 school records at Mississippi State, and was named the 2016 Senior Bowl Most Outstanding Player. Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin, who was Mullen's former boss at MSU, knows enough about him from hands-on experience to decide whether he's a good fit.
Following the 2014 season, Mullen criticized former defensive coordinator Geoff Collins for leaving MSU for the same position at Florida calling it a "lateral move".
"As I said, I'm very, very happy here", Mullen said after Mississippi State's Egg Bowl loss to Ole Miss.
Multiple sources on the UT campus, as well as people close to members of UT's Board of Trustees, indicate that first-year athletics director John Currie could potentially wrap up his search by the close of the weekend or first of next week.
In 9 years at Mississippi State, the Bulldogs have reached new heights: 8 straight bowl appearances, reaching #1 in the polls in 2014, playing in the Orange Bowl, recruiting and developing National Football League talent like Dak Prescott, Fletcher Cox, and Chris Jones.
If it turns out Florida settles for one New Hampshire native, Dan Mullen, as its next head football coach after another one, Chip Kelly, chose to bolt for UCLA, that's a pretty good consolation prize.
