He tells Harry at the time, he felt "it would all be for the greater good, and any harm done would be repaid a hundredfold in benefits for wizards".

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindlewald hits theaters on November 16, 2018.

The sequel's storyline, according to the studio, picks up where the original left off, with Paris circa 1927 as the backdrop. We did see a glimpse of Johnny Depp's villain in the first film, but it was ephemeral so it would be interesting to actually see what kind of a man this dark wizard actually is.

In an effort to thwart Grindelwald's plans, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead.

Newcomers include War & Peace's Callum Turner as the "famed Theseus Scamander" (AKA Newt's older brother), with Avengers: Age of Ultron's Claudia Kim joining as a mysterious "young woman we first meet as a featured attraction at a wizarding circus".

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is being directed by Potter alumni David Yates, from a screenplay by JK Rowling herself. It's almost 17 years after the initial "Harry Potter" film, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" hit theaters.

It will continue to follow Newt, who travels the world protecting endangered magical creatures and documenting them.

It's a stylish tableau, confirming one big return we were hoping for, and also hinting at the relationships that will be a major part of the film.

Principal photography commenced on the sequel on the outskirts of London in July. Warner Bros. also provided plot and character descriptions that flesh out what we're going to see, and also introduces the characters that are joining Newt's world.

It's implied in the books that Dumbledore's judgment was briefly clouded by his affection for the wizard Grindelwald-with dire consequences considering Grindelwald's turn to the darkest of dark sides.

Rowling has already begun work on the script for the third film while revealing the series is expected to comprise five films altogether.

The sequel comes after the original took in $814 million-plus in worldwide totals at the box office last fall.
