According to police, one of the individuals involved in the drug deal ran inside, and the gunman followed him into the restaurant, opening fire. The suspect is still at large.

The Starbucks is located in the 4700 block of N. Broadway in the city's Uptown neighborhood. "It was very loud, rapid succession". The boy has been taken to Lurie Children's Hospital, where his condition has improved from critical condition to being stabilized. The 24-year-old man and Watkins are documented gang members who have had "prior history with police". He was transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition.
