Jose Mourinho has urged Manchester United fans to get behind Romelu Lukaku after questioning their reaction to his goal drought.

After the 1-0 win, Mourinho said: "I liked the performance".

"Every ball was like the most important ball of their career, the concentration was there, the fight was there and we can not forget the quality of the team we were playing against". We showed great focus, concentration and desire, and we were playing a quality team.

The Portuguese held a finger to his lips at the final whistle and muttered directly into the camera after their most important win of the season so far.

'I don't understand when some people question, ' he said after the game. "You know, calm down, relax".

United are making headway in the cup competitions, but defeat to Spurs may leave United eight points off the pace come 5pm on Saturday and even at the end of October, that might prove too much to overhaul.

Asked if it was aimed at the critics he labelled "Einsteins" or journalists, he said: "Yeah, relax a little bit". Relax a little bit, don't be so nervous.

"No. The opposition bench did their job, super correct", said Mourinho.

Third-placed Tottenham, who thumped Liverpool 4-1 at Wembley last weekend, are level on 20 points with second-placed United after nine games. It has yet to arrive, the match where myself, Mauricio (Pochettino), my staff and his staff, have a problem.

We played against each other so many times since Spain, and we have a really good relationship. The performance can always be better, but I think we compete and we fight a lot.

'The manager tried to give us a chance, so we have to score and give assists'.

'Eric, let's see, he'll have one more training session, but he is the only one I hope from the injured group that can be ready'. I think it's very painful but that is football and I feel very proud.

It was a disappointing way for Spurs to lose a game and the fact that the London club was without injured leading striker Harry Kane is bound to revive the debate over whether their bid to be crowned champions is too reliant on the England forward.
