Paul Newman's Rolex Just Sold for a Whopping Sum

Paul Newman's Rolex Daytona Just Broke The Record As The World's Most Expensive Watch

Paul Newman Rolex sets auction record of $15.5m at Phillips New York

A piece of horological history, as the watch collectors call it, the Paul Newman Daytona has been sold for a record $17.8 million (15.4 million euros).

But even the most devoted Newman fans might have to collect their jaws off the floor over this watch's record-setting price.

But if it´s the most expensive wristwatch sold at auction, a handcrafted Patek Philippe pocket watch made for NY banker Henry Graves remains the most expensive overall, fetching more than $24 million at Sotheby´s in 2015. Factor in the additional "buyer's premium", and the watch's final price tag went for a whopping $17.8 million. After 12 minutes of bidding from collectors across 43 countries and a packed NY sale room, the Ref. 6239 stainless-steel watch sold to an anonymous telephone bidder for $17,752,500, setting a world record for the most expensive watch ever sold at auction.

The Rolex "Paul Newman" Cosmograph Daytona was bought by his wife, Joanne Woodward, around the time he filmed Winning, a 1969 film where he played the racing-car driver Frank Capua. Cox said at the time he knew Rolex was an excellent brand, but he didn't realize the significance behind the watch. Apparently Pop forgot to wind his wristwatch that morning. But who's James Cox, and how'd he get his hands on one of the most valuable timepieces in the world? Cox replied saying sorry, he didn't know, as he didn't have a watch.

Aurel Bacs, senior consultant for the Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo joint venture, said the auction made the highest total ever achieved for a watch auction in the US.

The Nell Newman Foundation supports her father's philanthropic values, "while serving Nell's commitment to organic foods and sustainable agriculture", according to the non-profit.A portion of the sale proceeds will also go to benefit Newman's Own Foundation.
