Nunes announced his new probe days after Fusion GPS - the firm behind the explosive Steele dossier - accused him of going back on his April decision to step away from the Russian Federation investigation.

They also obtained an eyewitness account - backed by documents - indicating Russian nuclear officials had routed millions of dollars to the US created to benefit former President Bill Clinton's charitable foundation during the time Secretary of State Hillary Clinton served on a government body that provided a favorable decision to Moscow, sources told The Hill. Since uranium is considered strategically important, the US government and several of its agencies had to sign off on the deal, which they did. "But one of the things that you know that we're concerned about is whether or not there was an FBI investigation". That approval has sparked controversy in part because of donations between 2009 and 2013 to the Clinton Foundation from people related to Uranium One.

The move gave Rosatom control of 20 percent of U.S. uranium stockpiles, and was decided after Uranium One made several donations to the Clinton Foundation of former president Bill Clinton.

"Acting on the urging of the President who has repeatedly denied the intelligence agencies' conclusions regarding Russian involvement in our election, they are created to distract attention and pursue the President's preferred goal - attacking Clinton and Obama", Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) said in a statement.

The FBI carried out an investigation into Ms Clinton's private use of an email server while she was serving as Secretary of State. "This is more about uranium and whether or not the government actually functioned properly".

"And in fact when I chose to just do it, I said to myself, I said you know, this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation is a made-up story, it's an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should have won", he said in the May interview. "This is basically based off of our conversations with informants over the last several months", he said.

Nunes said that he has not spoken to the White House about the matter.

The lawyer, William Taylor, also says the subpoena for the banking records is created to "punish President Trump's political foes while chilling future investigative research into his actions".

The panel's top Democrat spoke out against the uranium probe Tuesday, describing it as a "coordinated distraction" from the Russian Federation interference in the 2016 election, a subject the panel is investigating. She said at the very least Sessions should lift an Obama-era gag order on a witness who claims he has information about efforts to bribe the Clintons in regard to the deal.
