KL Rahul, who was in the squad for the ODIs against Australia, was left out.
The other notable absentees are spin twins Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin, both of whom are playing in the Ranji Trophy.
The 32-year-old Karthik was recalled for a ODI match in Antigua after almost three-and-a-half years.
The three-match ODI series will begin in Mumbai on October 22 while Pune (October 25) and Kanpur (October 29) will host the second and third match respectively. Batsman KL Rahul, who was in the T20 squad against Australia, also does not figure in the Indian ODI side. Matt Henry, Henry Nicholls, Colin Munro and George Worker will join the national team after conclusion of the series between India A and New Zealand A. Kane Williamson will captain New Zealand. We will see how it goes [as far as his batting position is concerned]. Karthik is now a part of the Tamil Nadu side that is playing Tripura in the Ranji Trophy. We are open to different combinations and options.
Also missing from the squad is Lokesh Rahul. While he picked up only one wicket from two games, he bowled well for the most part and didn't do much wrong. India is looking to clean sweep the New Zealand matches.
Meanwhile, an ODI call-up continues to elude Shreyas Iyer despite his impressive run of form.
The selection committee has gone for the same middle order comprising of Manish Pandey, Hardik Pandey, Kedar Jadhav and MS Dhoni while there haven't been any changes in the spin department too. All three have been named in the squad that would take on New Zealand.
