The Dodgers earned an extended break with their one-sided series victory over the Diamondbacks, one of the few teams to give consistent trouble to Los Angeles in the regular season.
The last time the Los Angeles Dodgers departed the lush coastlines of Southern California for the Sonoran desert, it was late August, with temperatures here up in the low teens - as in 113 and 114 degrees Fahrenheit - and the Dodgers melted like ice cream.
The Dodgers, better in every facet of the game, dispatched the Diamondbacks with a 3-1 win Monday night in Game 3, behind five solid innings from Yu Darvish, solo homers by Cody Bellinger and Austin Barnes and four innings of exquisite bullpen work, and will head back to L.A.to await the victor of the Chicago Cubs-Washington Nationals series, whom they will host in Game 1 of the NL Championship Series on Saturday at Dodger Stadium. "And you get six, seven, eight hits to go along with it, that's a pretty good night".
The Diamondbacks had runners reach base in the first, sixth, and ninth innings, but could not bring in any runs. This time around, Chase Field came prepared.
"Odds are that this exact same group will probably never be together again, so it was a pleasure to be a part of this group", Descalso said. The Boys in Blue jumped into that exact pool in September 2013, after clinching an NL West title against the Diamondbacks. So it's about trying to use this off day the best we can to get healthy. It hurts. We've got to admit it.
"This whole season has been insane", Bellinger said, adding: "It was really cool coming back here to Chase Field". "You take a step back and look at it from that perspective, as a whole year, and you realize how special a year it was for us". From spring training, we've been talking about winning a championship. We know how hard it is, and we aren't taking anything for granted.
Indeed, these Dodgers are a dominant team that doesn't always dominate in the traditional sense of the term. The right-hander allowed just two hits on the night and didn't issue a walk.
Four Los Angeles relievers combined to preserve a three-hitter.
Kenta Maeda got two strikeouts in a 1-2-3 eighth to protect the two-run lead.
Not long after the final out of Game 3, players embraced and congratulated each other in the Diamondbacks clubhouse.
Dodgers right fielder Yasiel Puig, hitting in the No. 8 spot, had another productive performance with three hits and two RBIs.
The sweep allows Roberts to set his rotation in any way he chooses.
The Diamondbacks' prolific offence was reduced to wild, unproductive swings at Dodgers starter Yu Darvish's slider.
"I was frustrated at myself not getting the job done, and he kind of pulled me aside and said, 'Next at-bat, don't try to do too much, ' " Bellinger said.
"I should have been a little bit quicker to save him, but it was a heck of a play", Roberts said of Bellinger, whose legs splayed in the air like a wishbone as he landed on his left shoulder on a dugout step but managed to keep the ball squeezed in the mitt on his left hand.
