Akhilesh Yadav has now made sure that the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections will be contested under his leadership. The decision was taken during the party's national executive meet on Wednesday, said senior party Ram Gopal Yadav.

Earlier, the Samajwadi Party chief had a tenure of three years but the party constitution was amended to extend it to five years.

"From now on it will be a very aggressive and focused Akhilesh, no looking back", said a party worker from Firozabad, Ram Dhari Yadav.

Thursday's unopposed re-election gives him absolute control over the party for upcoming elections, thus further sidelining his father and uncle Shivpal Yadav. Akhilesh Yadav seems to be little concerned and is confident that he can steer the party to the 2019 Lok Sabha poll without setting his house in order. The task of competing with and stopping the BJP can only be done by Samajwadi people. "Business has come to a standstill, inflation is rising and traders are in a state of mental shock", the former UP chief minister said. Find us on Facebook too!

Yadav was on Thursday unanimously re-elected the President.

Akhilesh's wife and MP from Kannauj, Dimple Yadav, was present at the convention.

The party was thought to be on the verge of a split after its dismal performance in the UP election, which saw it being reduced to 47 seats in the 403-member assembly amid a BJP sweep.

The relationship between Shivpal and Akhilesh grew bitter in September past year when Mulayam replaced Akhilesh with Shivpal as state party chief.

It was also believed that the former party president Mulayam Singh Yadav and his close aide and brother Shivpal Yadav will not be attending the annual convention as they had skipped the state meet in Lucknow on September 23 also.
