Delta CEO Ed Bastian made the big announcement on "CBS This Morning" on Wednesday. You won't have to pay to get on and messaging will be free, ' he said.

Bastian says Delta is the first USA global carrier to offer the free messaging service.

Alaska Air has since rolled out the complimentary messaging option to all flights on merger partner Virgin America, as well. 1, customers can use iMessage, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger to stay connected with their friends on the ground.

As for the effort announced by Delta announced on Wednesday, the company says it's "part of (a) multi-billion dollar investment in the customer experience".

Starting this weekend, passengers on Delta flights around the world will be able to keep in contact with their loved ones on the ground for free.

The in-flight messaging will not enable the exchange of photos or video files, however.

"Even the most seasoned travellers can find themselves mid-air and caught out by a last-minute cancellation or arrangement, said Tim Mapes, Delta's Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer".

Delta also took the opportunity to tout its options for the more traditional seatback in-flight entertainment offerings. The service will be available on more aircraft than any other carrier.
