Officials confirm one person killed, six injured in church shooting in Tennessee

The Nashville Fire Department later tweeted that all but one of the victims were over 60 years old. All of the wounded have been transported to area hospitals.

The mass shooting took place shortly after 11 a.m. Sunday morning at the Burnette Chapel Church of Christ, according to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department. A dispatcher quoted by the Tennessean newspaper said the scene was still active.

The gunman then accidentally shot himself in the left side of his chest. The suspect shot himself before being taken into custody.

A woman living next door to the church told WKRN two people came up to her door and said, "Someone is shooting at us at the church".

Police said one of the churchgoers has a gun permit and ran to his vehicle to retrieve his weapon, after which he confronted the suspect, who then shot himself.

The area around the church is shut down, while police continue their investigation.

In 2011, Spann almost died after suffering a heart attack while coaching the girls basketball team at the high school, according to the Nashville City Paper.

"The guy shot at them, but they was able to get out", Love said. "I am so fortunate".
