McAdoo was understandably frustrated by his team's performance in the 24-10 loss, with one play in particular standing out in his mind. Just like no one wants to cut ties with or demote a multiple Super Bowl-winning quarterback.
Eli Manning isn't exactly fleet of foot.
But then, when explaining what happened when the Giants were hit with a delay of game penalty when he made a decision to go for it on fourth down with five minutes left in the third quarter down by 10 points, he wasn't putting this on himself anymore.
"We just wanted to pick our spots, get him back in the mix, get him back in the fold", head coach Ben McAdoo said. Let the head coach be the head coach and someone else call the plays. Letting Matthew Stafford rest his arm in the fourth quarter is something everyone should be happy with. Shane Vereen busted out for 28 yards on six carries. That simply makes no sense to me.
Those are not ambiguous words.
Manning said it was his fault, too. The state of the offense isn't good and the Giants need to go back to the drawing board and find some answers.
What Beckham's absence did bring attention to is that the Brandon Marshall experiment is an absolute bust in the making.
Agnew's punt return, the fifth-longest in team history, broke open the game. Odell Beckham Jr. didn't play due to injury, and the team looked one-dimensional one offense, as the passing game was used more than the rushing attack.
"Mentally, I feel like I can do anything", Beckham said, per Ralph Vacchiano of SNY. For the rookie tight end, it was the first touchdown catch of his career.
Behind Stafford and Abdullah, the Lions were able to control the game and the clock. Manning was sacked five times Monday night as Ereck Flowers continues to have issues at left tackle. He simply can't continue to take the beating he's taken going back to previous year.
Asked why he did not call a timeout from the sideline to avoid the penalty, McAdoo again pointed to Eli Manning.
"Short week, short memory", Beckham said.
As Justin Pugh put it, ever so plainly: "Right now, not much is going right".
"Because we have a veteran quarterback who has played a lot of football and I expect us to get the ball snapped". We know what we're capable of. This is a new year; this is a new team.
Penalties, missed assignments and poor execution plagued the Giants all night.
It sounds like Giants coach Ben McAdoo is growing exhausted of Eli Manning doing Eli Manning things. "Guys gotta look themselves in the mirror".
Per Pro Football Focus, Flowers entered the season having surrendered 17 more quarterback pressures than any other offensive tackle over the past two years. While he begins his piece by saying that drawing conclusions after Week 2 is a "perilous exercise", he believes the Falcons have made the case that they are the best team in a conference that has very few teams without major problems. The Lions' defense put up another great showing racking up 5 sacks and an INT.
The delay of game was, indeed, sloppy.
"I feel I can play at a high level", he said.
McAdoo may have been sending a message to his quarterback that it's his job to lift the players around him, and to everyone else on the roster that no one is immune to criticism.
