BREAKING: 'SIx shot by gunman' at school as children take cover in classrooms

Shots fired at Washington high school

One person has been killed, and five injured in a shooting at the high school in Freeman, south of Spokane, in the USA state of Washington.

The school has 327 students, most of whom were there at the time of the shooting. Harper says some students alerted counselors.

The victims' names have not been released.

Knezovich said no officers fired their weapons and the gunman had been disabled by the time officers arrived.

But the armed student wasn't swayed by those words and shot him.

Deputies assembled parents in the high school's parking lot, where they waited anxiously for their children, the Spokesman-Review reported.

One parent told the Spokesman-Review that her son, a freshman at Freeman, had called her from inside the school that morning. Inslee promised that Washington State Patrol and all state agencies will do whatever they can to provide support and comfort.

The mother of two students at the nearby middle school told the paper that the high school had staged a lockdown drill just the day before.

State Superintendent Chris Reykdal says he has contacted the district and is offering any help. This is a bad day for the students, parents, teachers, administrators and the rest of that close-knit community. Knezovich said there is no longer a threat to the public.

Please help me raise money to help support the family during this hard time. She commended the school district for its communication.

Senator Patty Murray tweeted, "Heartbreaking headlines out of Spokane county". As we continue to get more details my heart goes out to all impacted.
