In June, CBS announced that Erinn Hayes wouldn't be back for the second season of the Kevin James sitcom Kevin Can Wait, and James' former TV wife, Leah Remini would join the series in her place. "I think when everybody collectively saw how Leah and Kevin were together in those last couple of episodes, there was an undeniable spark there", Kahl told reporters.
In an effort to keep the transition simple, and keep the show comedic rather than tragic, the new season of Kevin Can Wait will feature a time jump. "Obviously, the chemistry between James and Remini was fantastic in the stunt episodes", Sherman said.

While at the Television Critics Association summer press tour for CBS, senior executive vice president of programming Thom Sherman was asked to explain how Hayes' departure from "Kevin Can Wait" will be written into the sitcom. "Obviously the chemistry [between James and Remini] was incredible in the stunt episodes", he said.
Kevin Can Wait was the most watched new comedy of last season. It's unknown how the show will progress, but it is believed that Kevin Gable will be romantically involved with Remini's character, Vanessa. Kahl, however, made it clear that they did not discount Hayes' contribution on "Kevin Can Wait" and replacing her wasn't part of the original plan.
CBS has stressed that when they send Donna Gable to that cast reshuffling castle in the sky they will do so with "dignity and respect". She and James acted side by side for nine years on "King of Queens", also a CBS comedy.
Meanwhile, Sherman assured the writers that the series will not "morph into 'The King of Queens'". Very sad, I had a great experience season 1.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the death of Donna will be expounded in the premiere episode of "Kevin Can Wait" Season 2.
