Amit Shah, Smriti Irani to contest Rajya Sabha elections from Gujarat

With a strength of 121 MLAs in the 182-seat Gujarat Assembly, BJP is confident of sending party president Amit Shah as well as information and broadcasting minister Smriti Irani to the Upper House.

Mr. Dhanani also lambasted Gujarat Chief Minister for his remarks that the Opposition party MLAs were enjoying a holiday in a five star resort while the people of the State were suffering in the floods that have devastated the Banaskantha and Patan districts. Three MLAs, Balwantsinh Rajput, Tejashree Patel and PI Patel, quit on Thursday and joined the BJP, while three more submitted their resignations to Speaker Ramanlal Vora on Friday but did not join the BJP till evening. Talking on why Congress has chose to shift the MLAs, Congress Whip in the Assembly Shailesh Parmar said, "We are leaving Gandhi and Sardar's Gujarat to save democracy".

Meanwhile, the BJP said that the decision of senior Congress leaders to quit the party shows that Congress is a sinking ship.

The main opposition party in the state also has the support of two NCP legislators and the lone JD (U) MLA. He said the BJP was acting in a "brazen manner".

The Congress MLAs are scheduled to fly by the 2345 hrs Indigo flight to Bangalore.

He added that in the upcoming state elections, he will not fight from Congress.

Congress MLAs at Bengaluru airport. According to the numbers, BJP is entitled to two while Congress will get one. As a last ditch effort to keep its flock together, the Congress has flown 44 of its MLAs to the Egleton Resort near Ramanagara in Bengaluru, hoping that they would stay with the party at least till they cast their votes for Ahmed Patel in the RS polls.

The Congress has sent 40 of its legislators to a resort outside Bengaluru to fend off "poaching" attempts by the BJP ahead of the crucial Rajya Sabha polls in Gujarat. The Congress candidate will need the support of at least 47 MLAs to win and in such a situation if the Congress remains successful in keeping the rest of the legislators united, then Ahmed will not be hard. Though Ahmed has remained out of government and maintained a low profile, he is a known strategist for the party and has always remained at the helm of affairs in Congress.

This comes when the Rajya Sabha election is around the corner in Gujarat. Vaghela has resigned as LoP but has said would resign as MLA after the Rajya Sabha polls.

Vaghela further said that he would not give resignation as MLA till August 8.

Of the total 11 Rajya Sabha members from the State, the term of three - Irani and Dilipbhai Pandya (both BJP) and Ahmed Patel - is coming to an end on August 18.
