Whitehead was about to begin the third year of his career with the Cowboys, but didn't make a big enough impact on the field for them to keep him. He will now also face a charge of failure to appear in court.
Whitehead reportedly has another court date scheduled for August 10.
"After all this stuff that's happened with the Dallas Cowboys organization over the last two or three years, whether you're a fan or not, you follow it", Rich said.
Whitehead made news just last week for saying his XL Bully puppy had been stolen and was being held for ransom.
Jones would not comment on the agent's assertion that it is a case of mistaken identity.
ESPN reports that team sources indicate the Cowboys weren't interested in hearing Whitehead's explanation and that they simply wanted to release him after yet another incident.
During the 2016 National Football League season, Whitehead missed a Saturday walkthrough, resulting in head coach Jason Garrett informing him to skip the flight. He announced the next day on social media that the dog was returned unharmed.
Running back Ezekiel Elliott was involved in an altercation on July 16 at a club in Dallas where a man was punched.
"We will do what's in the best interest of the Dallas Cowboys", Garrett told reporters at training camp in Oxnard, Calif.
However, the Cowboys cut Whitehead anyway.
This arrest is the latest in a string of off-field issues for the Cowboys since the season ended.
