Kyrie Irving wants off Cavaliers - and LeBron's the reason

If Irving goes down to Miami, he would likely elevate that team to a playoff team.

That essentially would make the Cavaliers retaining Irving for the start of next season the longest odds on the board (risking $100 to win $1,000).

During a recent appearance on ESPN's Sportscenter, Stephen A. Smith may have just dropped a bomb about how the news on Irving's trade demand was leaked out.

On Friday, the Associated Press was told by two sources familiar with the situation that Cleveland's All-Star point guard has asked the Cavaliers to trade him.

Superstar Kyrie Irving has reportedly requested a trade from the Cleveland Cavaliers, and among the list of places where he'd like to be traded, according to ESPN's Chris Haynes. "We are respectfully going to keep those private", Wechsler told ESPN.

The news has come out of the blue, and is a bitter blow for Cavs fans who were already worrying over the future of LeBron James and had watched the National Basketball Association champion Golden State Warriors manage to strengthen by adding Nick Young from the Lakers.

What seemed like an unbreakable bond on and off the court quickly must've deteriorated during the offseason as LeBron James and Kyrie Irving seemed to be headed for a divorce.

Even if the Cav's fetch a favorable return for Irving, it is unlikely they will be able to acquire a player of his caliber or better.

In order for a trade featuring Anthony for Irving to work for the Cavaliers, they'd need to find a way to clear up some additional cap space.

Spurs point guard Tony Parker will become a free agent in 2018.

Irving has three years and $60 million remaining on his contract.

The Timberwolves and preferred landing spot are two things that haven't mixed much in the last decade-plus.

Irving is averaging 21.6 points, 5.5 assists, and 3.4 rebounds per contest in his career. While the idea of Irving and Kristaps Porzingis could turn the Knicks around, betting against big-time Knicks success is a smart play for Cleveland. He is not intervening in team decisions, an unusual decision for LeBron given his track record of earning the fan-created title of "GM LeBron".
