NYPD Officer Miosotis Familia 48 was shot and killed in the Bronx

The ambush shooting of NYPD Officer Miosotis Familia, 48, who was sitting in one of the RV-like mobile command centers, has added to the urgency of protecting the vehicles.

Crews from the NYPD's buildings-maintenance division spent Sunday freshening up the exterior of the The World Changers Church on Grand Concourse, where Familia will be waked.

A New York Police Department officer died after being shot in the head early Wednesday morning, according to news outlets in New York City.

Hundreds gathered Saturday night for a vigil to remember Familia, and flower bouquets line the sidewalk outside Familia's 46th Precinct stationhouse.

On Friday, Familia's oldest daughter, Genesis Villella, 20, released a statement, "She was incredibly amusing".

Familia - a 12-year veteran and mother of three - was gunned down in cold blood by cop-hater Alexander Bonds just a few blocks away as she sat in an NYPD vehicle around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.
