DeMarre Carroll has announced that he's leaving the Toronto Raptors.

Over two seasons with Toronto, the 30-year-old averaged 9.4 points per game, 4.1 rebounds, and one assist in 98 games played.

What really stood out about DeMarre, though, was his relentless hustle, incomparable grit and grind, and his overall ability to make winning plays. Masai Ujiri elected to re-sign his best player in point guard Kyle Lowry and, despite the loss of Patrick Patterson and P.J. Tucker in free agency, the Raptors were able to keep the frontcourt stable by bringing back Serge Ibaka on a lucrative contract.

In Atlanta, Carroll's minutes essentially doubled as did the majority of his stats. Last season, the starting gig at the 3 went to rookie Caris LeVert for the final 25 games of the season. The contract is expected to allow the Raptors to stay out of the luxury tax.

Carroll is owed $30 million over the next two seasons as part of the four-year, $60 million deal he signed upon joining the Raptors two years ago. Unfortunately, much to the disappointment of the Raptors, Carroll's career growth didn't continue on a trajectory to match the enormous pay raise. He has a career average of 9.8 over 12 National Basketball Association seasons with the Utah Jazz, Cleveland Cavaliers and the Pacers.

The Raptors sent Carroll to Brooklyn and two draft picks for Center Justin Hamilton. Anunoby, 19, is under contract through the 2018-19 season, with two team option years to follow.

Well, this is a new year and the Carroll trade has provided new hope. With almost $17 million in cap room left to sign free agents, expect more moves in and out of Brooklyn.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski also cited Carroll's connection to Atkinson as a reason Carroll could become the Nets' starting small forward in the short-term. Carroll is a solid defensive player, who will offer an upgrade at small forward. A guy formerly known as the Junkyard Dog could have very well filled that role anew.
