Huerter, Team USA lose to Canada

Canada defeats France in quarter-finals at men's under-19 hoops World Cup

US moves into medal round

University of Maryland sophomore forward Kevin Huerter led the USA U19 men's basketball team to a 96-72 win over Spain Sunday en route to earning the bronze medal in the 2017 FIBA World Cup in Cairo, Egypt.

The U.S. U19 team, with Georgia Tech guard Josh Okogie on the roster, was eliminated from the FIBA U19 World Cup Saturday, falling to Canada in the semifinals in Cairo. He added four rebounds, two assists and hit two threes in the championship.

United Kingdom freshmen Hamidou Diallo and P.J. Washington scored nine and six points respectively in Sunday's game. He didn't score a point, the first time that he failed to score in the tournament.

In a way, you have to a feel a little bad for the Team USA basketball program.

Auburn sophomore Austin Wiley led the way for United States of America with 19 points and 10 rebounds against Germany (3-2). "So, we'll go back and see if we can get something going".

Italy outscored Canada 12-10 in the final quarter but it mattered little as Canada wrapped up the title in style. Barrett closed out the quarter's scoring with a basket with 3.5 seconds left to cut the lead to 23-17. And the Canadians led 24-10 after 10 minutes - also because they dominated the glass with as many offensive rebounds (eight) as Italy had total boards.

"I think we came out and we played great", Pritchard said. But the USA's gold medal hopes were hurt by frigid shooting as the U.S. made just 32.9 percent of its field goal attempts (28-85 FGs), and was only 25-of-43 (.581 percent) from the foul line.

Winning gold at the U19 World Cup is Rana's latest accomplishment on the global stage.
