Another Gator assistant, Brad Weitzel, played at Palm Beach State College for former Palm Beach High School star Dusty Rhodes, who is generally acknowledged as the originator of the pipeline of top players from Palm Beach County to Gainesville.

For the first six innings of Tuesday night's game, everything appeared to be going according to plan for the Gators. Baseball does not have a clock, but eligibility does. They went two games and out.

LSU threatened again in the eighth, but the misplay in the seventh came when Florida was on the ropes.

This group was agonizingly close to accomplishing its mission.

It was a call that LSU fans will be lamenting for quite some time.

When asked about what made this team special, Byrne said: "Resilience".

"Next year, we'll get them next year", said Nancy Hazlatt. "I think that's the hardest thing". Watson was up next for LSU and he lined out to end the eighth inning.

LSU catcher Michael Papierski hit into what should have been a routine double-play, and Smith should have scored to tie the game. "They're a very deserving national champion". His best season may have been his last.

Reynolds (1-1, 8.59 ERA) is a Baton Rouge, Louisiana, native who pitched a scoreless inning in LSU's 13-1 loss to Oregon State last Monday.

Despite trailing the whole game, LSU never seemed out of it until Florida's offensive explosion late in the game. They'd been to the World Series in Omaha 11 times and had previously made it to the finals in 2005 and 2011, but came up short. In his 70th and final start, he went 5.2 innings allowing seven hits, two runs, no earned runs and one walk while striking out three batters. Hess walked two, one intentional, and hit one batter in the inning.

Deichmann, who hit a ground ball in the eighth inning that ended up with Robertson getting thrown out at the plate instead of crossing as the tying run, was nearly at a lost for words when asked how to describe the season.

It was a great season, but it didn't end particularly well.

"Us four were kind of highlighted for coming back, but there is so much more in this program than just us four".

Those three likely won't forget their final at-bats in an LSU uniform.

Before tonight, the University of Florida had won a total of five combined national titles in football and basketball.

"He was basically dead", Jerry Poché told The Times-Picayune.

As for offense, the Gators came into Tuesday's game with no everyday player hitting.300 or better. In the seventh inning in the final game with the score 2-1 and runners on the corners, things got a little insane.

The incident occurred during the sixth inning of Game 1. He gave up a rolling single for the only base runner.

With Deichmann at the plate, Robertson was 90 feet from doing what he had done more than anybody in the country.

Robertson's ultimate dream was not realized. But I'm at peace with my career, as I'm sure Jared is as well.

"It's tough to think it over, but I'm at peace with everything".
