'Scalise took a bullet for all of us'

US lawmakers back at work after shooting, congressman still hospitalised

Congressman faces third surgery today after ballpark shooting

Steve Scalise's condition has been upgraded to "serious" after he underwent surgery Saturday for injuries sustained in a shooting at a Republican congressional baseball practice earlier this week, the hospital treating him said in a release.

Dr. Jack Sava at MedStar Washington Hospital Center says Scalise's vital signs have stabilized after several operations.

Scalise has received an outpouring of prayers from members of both parties.

As for Scalise, he's still in critical condition, but he's improving. After Scalise was shot in the hip, the bullet traveled through his pelvis, fractured bones and injured internal organs. "When he arrived, he was in critical condition with an imminent risk of death". "Most importantly, we are forever grateful for the heroism of [Capitol Police officers] Crystal Griner and David Bailey, who saved everyone's lives at the baseball field that morning, including Steve's".

Scalise was shot in the hip on the ball field in Alexandria, Va., shortly after 7 a.m. and was taken to George Washington University Hospital in Washington for surgery.

The FBI recovered a cellphone, computer and camera from Hodgkinson's van and was examining them for evidence, the statement said. Democrats and Republicans played in honor of their grievously wounded colleague, Republican Rep. Steve Scalise.

Numerous players in the congressional game Thursday night are wearing Louisiana State University hats in honor of Scalise, a graduate of the school, as they assemble at Nationals Park in Washington.

Following a day that saw most congressional business canceled, the House approved legislation offering health insurance tax credits to some veterans while committees pondered subjects from federal land management to cybersecurity.

Aguilar plays outfield for the Democratic team; before the shooting, Scalise was slated to play second base for the Republicans.

"In Washington we have our disagreements, but we all agree that we are here to serve this nation we love and the people who call it home", Trump said.

A Secret Servicer officer was injured Wednesday evening by a vehicle he was trying to stop from disrupting President Donald Trump's motorcade back from the hospital where two victims of the attack on a congressional baseball practice are being treated.

The House used a voice vote Thursday to approve a resolution lauding the Capitol Police for protecting lawmakers and stating that "violence has no place" in society.

Democrat Cedric Richmond, a fellow Louisiana congressman, said as many others did that Scalise is a fighter.
