Wife: Man who shot congressman wanted to work on tax policy

Lawmaker critical, 4 others shot at Congress charity baseball practice

House back in session as lawmakers offer prayers for wounded

Police believe that Hodgkinson opened fire on Republican lawmakers at a congressional baseball practice Wednesday, June 14, 2017 in Alexandria. Yet not all Republicans saw it the same way, with many accusing Democrats of stoking violence on the left.

In April 2006, Hodgkinson was charged with misdemeanor battery after he stormed into a neighbor's house in an attempt to force home a teenage girl who, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, was under guardianship of Hodgkinson and his wife.

"We are strongest when we are unified and when we work together for the common good", said the president.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., was critically wounded in the shooting attack, along with a Capitol Police officer.

US Rep. Roger Williams (Republican, Texas) is wheeled away by emergency medical service personnel from the Eugene Simpson Stadium Park June 14, 2017 in Alexandria, Virginia. "The bullet traveled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs, and causing severe bleeding", MedStar said in a statement put out by Scalise's office. Another member of Congress and another member of the Capitol Police were injured, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said. President Trump visited Scalise in the hospital on Wednesday, calling him a "fighter".

"Steve in his own way may have brought some unity to our long-divided country", Trump added.

He didn't want to show his face on camera, but Matthew Jett has had a few casual run-ins with Hodgkinson over the years.

In a recent Facebook post, he wrote: "Trump is a Traitor".

Pelosi also notes that President Donald Trump occasionally used violent language on the campaign trail.

James Hodgkinson ate at local restaurants and complained about the prices, shared donuts with strangers at the YMCA where he hung out, stared into his laptop for hours, and generally drew little attention to himself, said people who encountered him before he opened fire on a congressional baseball team.

Sanders confirmed that Hodgkinson had apparently volunteered on his presidential campaign previous year and said in a statement he was "sickened by this despicable act".

"Let me be as clear as I can be".

"It will be play ball tomorrow night at 7:05", Congressman Joe Barton, manager of the Republican team, said at a news conference with Mike Doyle, the Democratic team manager. As the Los Angeles Times points out, it is Trump supporters that tied Bernie Sanders to the shooting in Virginia by using a fake quote.

"You don't take that as a physical threat", Bost said.

While top lawmakers, including Scalise, have security details, others do not and they regularly appear in public without protection.

Other Republicans said the criticism of Trump had crossed a line to a unsafe obsession among Democrats, one that implicitly encouraged violence.

The last gun attack against a member of Congress was in January 2011 in Tucson, Arizona, when Gabrielle Giffords, a Democrat, was shot in the head but survived an assault that killed six people. "I think today we're beginning to see the ramifications of that hate and we've got to dial this back and become civil again". The gunman was taken into custody and later died of his injuries.

Yet some within the Republican party began laying blame for the shooting at the feet of Democrats and the divisive politics of the moment in Washington D.C. following the rise of President Trump.

"He never really struck me as someone who would try and harm other people", said Jett.

Barton had arrived at the US Capitol still wearing his red baseball uniform.

"I know he wasn't happy with the way things were going, the election results and stuff", the shooter's brother told the newspaper.
