Iran beats Uzbekistan 2-0, gains entry to 2018 World Cup

Iran has played in the World Cup finals four times in the past - in 1978, 1998, 2006 and 2014 - while Uzbekistan is still seeking their first ever qualification.

It will be Iran's fifth appearance at soccer's premier tournament, reports Xinhua news agency.

Iran confirmed their spot with a 2-0 victory over Uzbekistan at the Azadi Stadium here.

But Taremi calmed Iran's nerves when he added the second goal late on by curling a low shot into the corner of Lobanov's goal to spark the celebrations amongst the home supporters. Iran are still unbeaten in the third stage of qualifying and amazingly have not conceded a single goal during the campaign, thus underlining their credentials as one of Asia's football giants. Men, woman and children spilled into the streets with flags and chants and motorists honked their horns.

Uzbekistan are eight points behind top placed Iran at the third spot and have only two games remaining.

In the main streets and squares Tehrani residents gathered and chanted "Queiroz, we love you", and "Queiroz, thank you".

Iran head coach Carlos Queiroz said that the match has been scheduled for October 10 in Russian Federation. They join hosts Russian Federation and five-time World Cup winners Brazil in securing their spot for next summer.

Asian Football Confederation president Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa praised the consistency of the Iran team.

Iranian team maintained the top position in Group A with a clean sheet on their way to the World Cup.

He received a yellow card and missed the next match against South Korea.
