Trump, Francis: After clashing, a search for common ground

"A Christian community that does not safeguard the Holy Spirit with tenderness and with respect" is like the serpent with the long, long tongue, who is depicted in statues as being crushed under Mary's foot. Some of the main themes contained in them contrast sharply with President Donald Trump's policies and campaign promises, particularly concerning approaches to the environment and income inequality.

"And I want to say to you, we are the "No" that God scrawls on the wall".

Pope Francis believes climate change is one of the greatest threats to humanity. Thank you very much.

Trump is the type of man to say things like, "I have the best words", and "I'm really rich". Marinella Corvaggi, who works for the advocacy group "No War", could be seen listing on a sheet of paper the conflicts recently initiated by the West, including Trump, around the world. He spent the night at the US ambassador to Italy's residence.

According to reports, during the discussion Ivanka spoke about the Trump administration's efforts to combat trafficking not only in the US, but throughout the world, telling attendees that "combatting human trafficking and modern slavery is both a moral and strategic interest domestically and overseas". Francis has taken more modern stances on other issues as well, including LGBT rights and global warming. Something similar could happen this time.

President Donald Trump landed in Italy Tuesday evening, his first visit to a European country as US leader and part of his four-nation foreign trip that started in Saudi Arabia.

When the pope and the president meet in the Apostolic Palace - the official residence of the pope in Vatican City - this Wednesday, they will be setting a much-needed example for a nation convulsed by post-election tantrums.

Instead, the pope followed what the scientific community says.

Vatican sources said the pope's inner circle was heartened that Trump had toned down his previously harsh rhetoric about Muslims during his visit to Saudi Arabia at the weekend. During this speech, he emphasized that the United States is not at war with Islam, describing it as "one of the world's great faiths".

"I think that the climate (of the meeting) will be quite good".

The meeting was keenly awaited as the two men have already clashed at a distance on issues including migration and climate change.

Since being elected in 2011 Mr Higgins has quoted the pope on a number of occasions and also referred to the "the globalisation of indifference", a phrase used by the pontiff about the handling of the migrant and refugee crisis in the Mediterranean.

Following behind Trump were his wife Melania, daughter Ivanka, her husband, Jared Kushner, a top White House aide, national security adviser H.R. McMaster and adviser Hope Hicks. I think you'll enjoy them.

Mrs. Trump smiled and chatted with Francis after the two warmly shook hands.

In her visit, Trump is expected to meet female victims of human trafficking as well as members of the organizations who deal with this and other human rights issues.

The President is slated to arrive in the Vatican at 8:30am on Wednesday, and the Pope has moved his General Audience from 10:00am to 10:30am to make sure that the two leaders have plenty of time to discuss the issues that each brings to the table.

While his talks in Saudi Arabia and Israel were mostly friendly, the meeting between the head of the Roman Catholic Church and the thrice-married, blunt-spoken Trump had the potential to be a little more confrontational.

Given that there are normally tens of thousands of pilgrims in St. Peter's Square for the Wednesday public audience, the Vatican and the USA organizers of the visit have agreed that President Trump will not enter the Vatican city-state under the Arch of the Bells that is on the left hand side of St. Peter's Square.

Reaching the St. Damasus Courtyard of the Apostolic Palace, where the USA flag flew for the morning, Trump was welcomed by Archbishop Georg Ganswein, prefect of the papal household, and a formation of 15 Swiss Guards.
