Kevin Nashan Wins James Beard Award for Best Chef: Midwest

In her acceptance speech, the chef thanked her team at the St. Charles Avenue restaurant and owner Donald Link, calling him "the best friend and mentor anyone could ever ask for".

Nora Pouillon, of D.C.'s Restaurant Nora, received the 2017 James Beard Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award. Michael Solomonov of Zahav in Philadelphia, as many predicted, was awarded Best Chef.

The awards were presented Monday in Chicago.

This was Furstenberg's fifth nomination at the so-called Oscars of the food and drink world. "We're third generation restaurateurs of a 70-year-old restaurant". This was his seventh straight year being nominated.

The win signals that Starr, who owns 32 restaurants in four different states, is finally being recognized as more than just a successful businessman - a culinary visionary. The James Beard Foundation announced last October that the awards will remain in Chicago through 2021. Stephen Starr, who got his start in Philadelphia, won the Outstanding Restaurateur award and his New York City restaurant Le Coucou was named Best New Restaurant.

Past winners in the Outstanding Baker category include Joanne Chang of Flour Bakery + Cafe in Boston and Jim Lahey of Sullivan Street Bakery in NY. Seattle, New Orleans, Houston and San Francisco also won national awards in other dining and bar categories. The Rising Star Chef of the Year - which acknowledges an up-and-comer under the age of 30 was named Zachary Engel of Alon Shaya's Shaya in New Orleans (our 2015 Restaurant of the Year).
