A Dallas Fire-Rescue paramedic and a bystander were shot on a residential street late Monday morning as first responders answered a call for help, police say. After the murder, Dallas police believe, Brown's girlfriend ran from the house, attracting the attention of the a 24-year-old neighbor. A police robot entered the home after several hours and located the bodies of two people, including the suspected shooter.
According to the mayor, the paramedic went into surgery at Baylor University Medical Center and became stable but in a critical condition.
Officers called to a Reynolds Avenue home about 11:30 a.m. found a Dallas Fire-Rescue ambulance already at the scene and a firefighter-paramedic and another person bleeding in the street, interim Dallas Police Chief David Pughes said. "Thoughts and prayers are with all impacted", read a tweet from Dallas Fire-Rescue. Authorities have not identified him, but did say he is an 11-year veteran of the department.
The shooting comes almost a year after five police officers in Dallas were killed and nine were injured in an ambush. Brown appears to have allegedly first shot his neighbor, and he then shot one of the paramedics who responded and were treating the neighbor. Officers took cover from the gunfire, he said. It is not known if they were distributed or if the injured paramedic was wearing protection when shot.
The paramedic was taken to Baylor Medical Center in Dallas by police officers and was in critical condition while undergoing surgery Monday afternoon.
Dallas was the scene last July of a mass shooting of police officers in which five were killed and seven wounded.
A police robot found two bodies in a home east of downtown, including that of the suspected gunman, as authorities scoured the neighborhood following the shooting, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings said during a news conference.
The suspect is described as a bald black male about 5ft 8in tall, weighing around 14 stone and walking with a limp. FBI agents and other federal officers also were in unmarked vehicles waiting at intersections in the neighborhood. As for the mysterious person who was found dead in the crime scene with the gunman, Richard Hill, City spokesperson, said that he was a man. Hill didn't release nay other information. Officials from the local fire department and parks department passed out water and Gatorade to officers blocking the roads.
